Liquid Humic Acid for Alberta Farms

Want to add humic acid to your fertility program without handling another dry product? Peace Soil Works supplies three Black Earth liquid options: humiZEN Alpha for broad liquid-fertilizer compatibility, humaPLUS Liquid Carbon 12% for compatible soil and foliar programs, and humaPLUS Liquid Carbon HC 24% for growers wanting a more concentrated humic formulation. Tell us what you’re applying, and we’ll help you compare the right product, rate and cost per acre.

humiZEN Alpha — Made for Liquid Fertilizer Programs

Using liquid starter fertilizer at seeding? Ask us about Black Earth humiZEN Alpha. Alpha combines humic and fulvic substances in a formulation designed to mix with a broad range of liquid fertilizers. That makes it an option worth considering when you want to add humics to an existing fertility pass rather than make a separate application.

Black Earth humiZEN Alpha liquid humate for compatible liquid fertilizer and foliar applications

Black Earth’s current analysis lists 2.0% humic acid (ISO 19822), 3.5% fulvic acid (ISO 19822) and 3.5% humic substances (colourimetric method), with a pH of 5–6. These are separate manufacturer measurements using different tests, not a single percentage to add together. Unlike the higher-pH Liquid Carbon formulations, Alpha was developed with broad liquid-fertilizer compatibility in mind.

Where Alpha fits: in-furrow or banded nutrition programs, irrigation injection and foliar spraying. The Canadian product label lists 1–4 L/acre for soil applications and 0.5–1 L/acre for foliar applications. Rates depend on crop, use and label directions.

Not every tank mix is automatically compatible. Agitate before use and perform a jar test with the exact fertilizer blend, dilution and water you’ll be using. Confirm any crop-protection tank mix is permitted by its label.

See Black Earth’s Alpha product details and the Canadian Alpha label for full directions.

humaPLUS Liquid Carbon — Ready-to-Use 12% Humic Substances

Standard Liquid Carbon is an alkaline formulation with 12% humic substances measured by the colourimetric method. It suits compatible soil-directed and foliar programs, but its mixing limitations are different from Alpha’s. For a stronger concentrate, see Liquid Carbon HC 24% below. We’ll help you decide which one works best with your fertilizer system.

Black Earth Liquid Carbon: A Simple Way to Add Humics

Liquid Carbon comes from humalite-derived humic substances and is formulated for liquid application. Humics can interact with nutrients in the soil and root zone, making them worth considering where fertilizer efficiency and longer-term soil management are priorities. They’re not a substitute for nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium, and results will depend on your soil, weather and application program.

On Peace Country farms, the best starting point is usually a pass you’re already making. We can help you decide whether a compatible seeding, foliar or soil application makes sense instead of adding cost and field traffic without a clear plan.

Where Standard Liquid Carbon Fits on Your Farm

At Seeding and in the Root Zone

Applying humics near the root zone is a practical way to include them in an early-season fertility plan. Black Earth lists a pre-plant or in-furrow rate of 1–2 L/acre for Liquid Carbon. Confirm seed safety and fertilizer compatibility for your crop and placement system before application.

With a Foliar Pass

Already going across the field with the sprayer? Black Earth also lists a foliar rate of 1–2 L/acre. It may be an opportunity to add humic substances during a scheduled pass, only where the herbicide or pesticide labels permit that tank mix. Liquid Carbon is not a replacement for required spray adjuvants.

Side-Dress, Strip-Till and Irrigation

For soil-directed applications, Black Earth lists 2–8 L/acre for side-dress or strip-till and 3.8 L/acre through irrigation water. The right approach depends on your equipment, dilution, placement and other products being applied.

Liquid Carbon 12%: Product Information

  • Humic substances: 12% — colourimetric test method (not an ISO percentage)
  • Organic carbon: 4.49%
  • pH: 9–11
  • Density: approximately 1.05 kg/L
  • Manufacturer packaging: 114 L, 500 L and 1,000 L, with bulk on request

Specifications and rates are from Black Earth’s Liquid Carbon product page and its published product sheet (PDF). Ask Peace Soil Works about the sizes currently available.

Liquid Carbon Mixing and Storage

Don’t assume liquid humic acid can be mixed with every fertilizer. Black Earth advises against mixing Liquid Carbon with concentrated high-nitrogen or phosphate liquids, including products such as 10-34-0. UAN may be suitable at the manufacturer’s recommended dilution, but a jar test is essential before blending. Always follow the current product and pesticide labels.

Store Liquid Carbon out of direct sunlight and protect it from freezing and excessive heat. Black Earth recommends a 10–45°C storage range and lists a one-year shelf life under cool conditions.

humaPLUS Liquid Carbon HC — 24% Concentrated Humic Substances

Want a higher-strength liquid humic? Black Earth humaPLUS Liquid Carbon HC gives growers a concentrated formulation for compatible soil and foliar applications, and it can also be used for dry-fertilizer impregnation. If you’re buying humic for a larger acreage, it’s worth comparing HC with standard Liquid Carbon on both the product cost and the application cost per acre.

Black Earth humaPLUS Liquid Carbon HC concentrated liquid humic product 24 percent colorimetric

Black Earth’s published analysis: 24% humic substances (colourimetric method), 7.70% organic carbon, pH 10–12 and approximately 1.11 kg/L density. The 24% figure uses the same colourimetric testing approach as standard Liquid Carbon’s 12% figure. It is not an ISO humic acid percentage.

Application Options for Liquid Carbon HC

  • Pre-plant or in-furrow: 1–2 L/acre
  • Foliar: 1–2 L/acre
  • Side-dress or strip-till: 2–8 L/acre
  • Irrigation injection: 3.8 L/acre
  • Dry fertilizer impregnation: up to 3.8 L/tonne of urea, according to Black Earth’s Canadian sheet

These are Black Earth’s published HC rates, not a recommendation to automatically double the amount of humic substances applied. The manufacturer also recommends diluting HC 1:1 with water when preparing a solution comparable to standard Liquid Carbon. Talk to us about the rate, dilution and handling that make sense for your equipment and fertility program.

Important mixing distinction: HC is a strongly alkaline concentrate. Black Earth says not to blend it with acid fertilizers such as 10-34-0 or concentrated high-nitrogen/phosphate liquids. UAN use requires proper dilution and a jar test. Always agitate before use, check product and pesticide labels, and confirm the exact tank mix first. If broad fertilizer compatibility is your priority, Alpha may be the better starting point.

Read Black Earth’s Liquid Carbon HC product information and its Canadian HC sell sheet (PDF) for current directions and specifications.

Liquid Humic Acid, Granular Humic Acid or Raw Humalite?

They’re not all the same product. humiZEN Alpha is designed for broader liquid-fertilizer compatibility; Liquid Carbon 12% is a ready-to-use alkaline liquid; and Liquid Carbon HC 24% is a concentrated option for compatible soil, foliar and dry-fertilizer impregnation programs. Magna granular humic acid is a processed, partially soluble product for dry handling and soil applications. Raw Alberta humalite is better considered as a bulk soil-directed amendment. Need a foliar fulvic product instead? See our Fulvic Acid page.
